As we make our way, you’ll catch a glimpse of the ongoing excavations of ancient Aigai. Before reaching the palace, we’ll stop at the ancient theatre—a site of great drama, where a fateful and tragic event unfolded over two millennia ago. The walk to the palace is about 1.5 km, so be sure to wear comfortable clothing for this unforgettable adventure.


The Royal tombs
Prepare to descend into the underworld—this is no ordinary museum. Hidden beneath a hill, this extraordinary site takes us deep into the realms of life, death, and the afterlife.
Here lies the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, surrounded by the treasures buried with him. You’ll also discover the resting places of other family members, each with its own story to tell.

Polycentric Museum of Aigai (New museum)
Step into this remarkable new museum, a treasure trove of artifacts from the ancient city of Aigai and its surrounding necropolis. Discover sculptures, religious objects, and items from daily life that vividly recreate the world of the Macedonian kingdom and its people.
With treasures spanning seven centuries, the museum reveals the rich tapestry of this ancient world. The museum also features a restored section of the palace’s second floor, bringing the architectural splendor of the era to life.


Getting There
Vergina is approximately 79 kilometers (49 miles) from Thessaloniki, making for a 52-minute drive by car, depending on traffic.
On the way, you’ll pass the Malgara tolls, which are relatively inexpensive (around €0.90 depending on your vehicle). Be sure to have some change or a credit card ready for this.
Upon arrival, you'll find free parking in the municipal lot, conveniently located near the tombs and the palace. Additionally, there is another free parking area next to the new museum for your convenience when visiting it.
